Calakmul,Campeche

Let me begin with one of the most amazing ruins I have ever visited, Calakmul, they were  discovered back in the 30´s but it wasn't until the early 90´s that most of us knew about them.

They are in the middle of the jungle in the Ecological Reserve Calakmul, you have to drive 60 km in the jungle in order to get there, there are no stores of any kind nor gas stations so be sure you have enough to eat and drink. It takes about an hour to drive through these 60 km. because it is a dirt road. This is one of the few places where you can still climb the pyramids, which are truly big, they go higher than the trees around them so when you finally get to the top you can see the jungle from above.
View from the top of the pyramid.

The whole area is truly big, we walked more than 3 hours with temperatures over 30 celsius. So if you want to get to the biggest pyramids faster you should take the short road, when you get to the point when the road goes straight or turns to the right keep going straight, you´ll arrive pretty fast to the second biggest one in a few minutes.

Once you left your car, you walk this path into the jungle.

Calakmul was one of the most important cities of the mayan culture, their enemy was the other famous mayan city "Tikal", they even were at war.

There are many other mayan ruins near Calakmul, I suggest you go here first and if you have still time try to visit some others, but this is the most beautiful of this area in my point of view.

Calakmul´s Location in reference with Cancun.
